Year's up!

Notable things from my 2010 (both good and bad):

  • Spent a year in an apartment that I never felt comfortable in
  • Ended a 3.5-year-long relationship
  • Started the second year of my current job
  • Brought Kai into my life
  • Attended the funeral of a dear friend
  • Made the President's List in college for the first time
  • Met Austin
  • Made some new friends
  • Had a wonderful visit with my parents in the Florida Keys after a year and a half without going there
  • Became infected with Scott Pilgrim Fever when the final volume of the comic was released, the movie was released and the game was released all in the same month
  • Decided to stop going to college indefinitely
  • Joined Nerdy Show
  • Bought a seasonal pass for Disney World and became a big fan of the parks
  • Experienced the brief return of my back problems
  • Lost my little Puck
  • Found a new place to live
So, that is a brief summary of my year. I might have forgotten to mention some stuff, and if so, I'll probably go back and edit the list later. It was quite a year, it had its ups and downs, and I think I'm happy to put it behind me. I hope that 2011 will be more pleasant, overall. My new year's resolution is to finish more video games. That was my resolution last year, and I didn't do a very good job. These are the only games that I completed:

  • Wario Land 4 (GBA) - 2/24
  • Heavy Rain (PS3) - 3/21
  • Braid (PC) - 3/31
  • Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth (DS) - 4/28
  • Portal (PC) - 6/07
  • Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (PS3) - 9/7/10
  • Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (PS3) - 9/24
  • VVVVVV (PC) - 10/21
My problem is that I start a bunch of different games without seeing them through to the end. I need to get better about that! More completed games in 2011! I swear!

I'm all moved in to my new place, and I'm quite happy with it so far. The move went really smoothly, and now I just need to get all my crud unpacked. I've been so busy with my family in town that I haven't been able to do much of that yet. I finally met one of the roommates that I hadn't met prior to my move-in, and she's really nice! We've already talked more than I talked to my last roommates in the whole year I lived there. I have a really good feeling about this place, and I think I'm going to be very happy there.

Look at what my roommate did!

That was so sweet of her! I feel so welcomed.

I visited my old place for the last time the other day, to grab any items I had forgotten and to leave the keys. My old roommates weren't even home, so I didn't say bye to them, but I did leave a note. It was really hard to say goodbye to their dogs, though. I'm going to miss them very much. I took some pictures with them before I left:

Bye bye, doggies. :(

For New Year's Eve tonight, my mom and I are about to go to the LAN center I always hang out at. I might be bringing my webcam and streaming it, so look out for that!

I hope everyone has a wonderful new year!

PC build begins...?

Well, I bought the first part of my future PC last night: the video card!
I grabbed this one: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=6651253&Sku=M452-0465

I wasn't planning on buying any PC stuff just yet. However, it was a really good deal ($50 off), and it's a sweet card, so I couldn't resist! I'm researching other parts now, and I have a couple picked out. I don't quite have enough money put aside for everything yet, but I hopefully should soon, then I'll be in business! I'm thinking I should have it all ready in a couple months.

Wow, I got more from adsense yesterday than I remember getting in a long time! Thank you to whoever clicked an ad! It wasn't a ton or anything, but I usually only get a few cents a day, so anything more than that is awesome.

My car's battery was out of power when I tried leaving work tonight, so I had to leave it in the parking lot for the night. Laaaaaame.

Moving tomorrow! SO EXCITED!

That's about how excited I am.

Christmaaaaas

Merry Christmas, everyone! I hope you've all had a splendid day.

I got a big haul of stuff (money, restaurant gift cards, blurays, a DS game, iguana statues, Sonic figures, jewelry, candy, cookies, other odds & ends). My family is so generous! It was great spending the day with them all, and delicious food was had. A very nice Christmas, overall.

Christmas card:

Edit: Here's a photo from my family's gathering.

Almost time to move!

I'm so dang excited about moving! I've had enough of this place, and I'm ready to get out. I have a nice-sized moving crew assembled, consisting of some family members and friends. I'm so happy about moving that I started a countdown off to the right of the page! I also have a new poll that goes with this theme.

I'm getting ready to spend time with my family. They'll be in town soon for Christmas and all that jazz, so it'll be nice to see them once again. I predict going out to eat a lot and seeing a few movies. I can't wait to eat my mom's Christmas cookies!

The boys and I beat Castle Crashers last night. It's about time! It only took us, what, TWO MONTHS?!

Jed and Cody and I have been playing ModNation Racers. Those two have been really serious about track-making! I made a couple of really quick tracks so far, and I'll probably work on some more serious ones later on. Fun game!

Here's the house I grew up in. I miss it very much.

Went to Disney Again!

My Disney friends came to town, so we visited the parks together yesterday. We went to Magic Kingdom, then Epcot, then Hollywood Studios, then back to Epcot! We just sorta went with the flow and did whatever we felt like doing. Had a blast! Man it was FRIGGIN COLD, though! When it got dark, I had to wear a big ol' coat and some gloves.

We recorded some clips, and I compiled them into a short video here:

And there's also this one, which is a special light show that they have at Disney's Hollywood Studios every year during the holiday time:

It was so incredible! We watched it happen 3 times, and they used a different song each time. I was blown away.

One of the highlights of my day was filling up an empty water bottle with VegitaBeta, my favorite drink from Epcot that I mentioned in one of my previous posts. You can see me doing it in the clip. I actually drank the bottle down to about 1/3 and then refilled it! Teeheehee. I still have the full bottle, and I'm saving it for a special occasion. Oh yeah, that cookie was pretty amazing, too!

Here are a few photos from the day:

Sarah and I in front of the famous Spaceship Earth at Epcot.

Test Track ride photo. I have a special method of getting some ride photos for free!

The sunglasses pose was completely accidental. I was in the process of removing them, and my friend happened to take the photo at that second. It was perfect!

Disney is fun.

Wow!

I just got a donation! Thank you so much, Michael! I'll be adding your drawing to the queue I have built up. I'll try to crank those drawings out for you donors soon, I've just had a lack of inspiration lately.

All donations I get are going into my "PC building fund". Every little bit helps tremendously, and I appreciate it so very much.

Man, I need a new poll! I'll make one now. There we go! Vote!

Keepin' busy

I've been trying to get out of my room a lot lately, since it's been really sad in here without Puck around. I went to the LAN center a few times last week, had some good games with the guys. I can't really stand playing anything on my own computer anymore, since most recent games run so poorly. I also went to Disney on Wednesday.

This visit, I spent the evening at Epcot. It was quite chilly outside! It was very refreshing, though, and a very enjoyable evening overall. I was thrilled to see that my favorite drink had returned at "Club Cool"! It wasn't there last time I went, so I feared that it was gone forever. It's called VegitaBeta, and it's a drink that isn't available anywhere else in the world, except for "The World of Coca Cola" in Georgia. It used to be a drink sold in Japan, but they stopped making it. I wish it was something that's available to purchase! Pretty much the best anyone can do is just sneakily fill up an empty bottle with it. I'll probably do that next time I go! I'm so naughty. I was ever so happy to see Captain EO again, which never EVER gets old. I sing along with MJ every time I watch it. Pretty much the main reason I decided to go to Epcot this time was because their Illuminations closing fireworks show is extended right now for the holiday season. The regular version of the show is spectacular enough, but the extended version was amazing! It's a very powerful show. I'll be going to another Disney park this Wednesday, since my friends will be in town. Not sure which one yet.

Yesterday, my boss treated all of my co-workers and I to a delicious dinner at an Italian restaurant. We did a gift exchange, and everyone picked a gift out of the pile. I got a pink bunny scarf made by my co-worker. The bunny has a mustache. It is really cute and funny, and I would probably actually wear it if it wasn't pink (I hate pink). What a shame. I did get something else along with it that I actually like, though. It's a little painting of a lizard/alligator creature holding a cup of Italian ice. Very cute! The boss also gave all of us gift cards to some breakfast restaurant, which was super nice of him.

So I'm moving at the beginning of January! I finally managed to pick out a place I like. I think I'm going to be a lot happier there! I'm really really looking forward to moving. Not to mention, the internet speed at that place is FANTASTIC! I am drooling in anticipation!

What would go along well with a great internet connection? A great gaming PC! I am currently planning to build one. I've held off for so long because it's so expensive, but I think I'm finally ready to go for it. My parents offered to give me a little bit towards it as a Christmas gift, so that will definitely help. I need to be careful about my expenses for a little while so it doesn't hit my wallet as hard. Once I get that built, I'll finally be able to play all the newest games that can't run on my laptop, and I'll be able to record and all that good stuff!

I saw a free screening of Tron: Legacy tonight! I found out about the screening like an hour before it started, so I ran out immediately to try to make it in time. I managed to get in just fine, and I even got a pin and a poster! The movie was great, and I might go see it again when it's actually out. Awesome visuals and music (of course, since the music's by Daft Punk)! I recommend it!

I'm sorry these posts are always so long. I'll try updating more frequently so they're shorter. I hope people actually read them. Here's a blurry pic of my mom and I:

About Puck

This is the story of Puck. Puck the hedgehog, my little baby.

I just laid him to rest last night. He was my little guy for a very short two and a half years, but he made such a big impact on my life that I'll never forget him.

In the summer of 2008, I was ready to get a new pet. I was still feeling the loss of my iguana, Lantz (and I still do to this day), but I had healed enough to allow a new little friend into my life. Browsing craigslist one day, I spotted an ad that grabbed my attention. Someone was rehoming an adorable little hedgehog! I saw the photos of him and immediately fell in love. These are the original photos that were posted:

So cute!

When I saw the ad, I started researching everything involved in hedgehog care. After learning what I needed, I thought it over for a bit, and then I decided that he would be a great pet for me! I contacted his owner, and then the little dude was mine!

He was two months old when I got him, so he was still pretty small. His original owner had named him "Dexter", but I wanted something different. It took me forever to settle on a name for him! I asked my friends to help me come up with one, but nothing was appealing to me. I'm not sure what made me think of it, but I started calling him "Puck" as a placeholder name. As time went on, I got so attached to that name that it remained as his permanent one.

Most people hear his name and assume he was named after a hockey puck or something, but I was thinking more along the lines of the character Puck from English folklore. He is primarily known as a shape shifting imp creature who is very mischievous.  The character is most well known from Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. I felt that the name was appropriate because my Puck would do some things that revealed a bit of a mischievous nature in him. I often called him Puckie, too.

In the beginning, I tried holding Puck a lot in order to calm him down and get him used to human interaction. As much as I tried, though, it never made much of a difference. He wasn't really a people-hedgehog. He would calm down and be quiet if I was holding him, but if he was in his cage or walking around somewhere, he was always extremely nervous. The smallest little noises and movements would make him curl up into a ball and do his trademark huffing/hissing sound. Oh, what I would give to hear that sound now.

He always made the funniest noises. They're probably the most unforgettable thing about him. His huffy/hissy sound that he did from breathing heavily any time he was startled was the most prominent, of course. I would hear that sound in response to nearly anything I did in my room, whether it was turning on the lamp, opening the closet door, rustling through bags and boxes, or whatever else. I found it so funny that he felt the need to continue doing that after being in my room for so long. Surely he was used to it all by then! Silly little dude. My friends and family were always amused by that sound as well.

He also made so many adorable sounds while he was sleeping. Since he spent the majority of each day asleep, he served as a constant soundtrack for my room. The cutest of all were his little chirps and squeaks. They always made me smile. I wish I had recorded them. He would also often thump his foot against the bottom of his cage, which I found funny.

Puck spent the majority of his time hidden under little towels. Since he didn't really like human interaction, he pretty much only came out on his own to eat and drink. Hedgehogs are nocturnal, so I would feed him each night before I went to bed. For the last two and a half years, I've fallen asleep to the sound of him crunching his food every night. It's hard to get used to not hearing it anymore.

One of the problems I struggled with throughout his life was his weight. I fear this is one of the reasons why he passed so young. He gained weight so quickly without me even realizing until he was quite big, and so I spent the last two years trying so hard to get him down to a more healthy size. It was difficult, because he never wanted to do anything but stay curled up all day, and he wouldn't eat anything except his dry cat food. I believe he had dropped his weight down a bit in the last few months, but it ended up not making a difference in the end. I even built him a huge multi-level cage several months ago in order for him to get more exercise. Here's the cage:

It took him a little time to get used to using the ramp, but he seemed to enjoy his new cage!

One thing I loved to do was bring him outside and have him walk around in the grass. I doubt that he enjoyed it very much, since he always just wanted to be bundled up under his towel, but it was good for him to get some exercise and fresh air. Whenever I did that, people would always come up and ask tons of questions about him. They were so fascinated to see such an unusual creature walking around like that.

I also enjoyed giving him baths, and it was so fun watching him swim around in the bathtub. He used to be terrified when I'd wash him in the sink, but he got used to it over time, and he eventually wouldn't freak out at all when I scrubbed his quills nice and clean with a toothbrush and some baby shampoo. I loved snuggling him in a towel after he was all clean from his bath.

Despite what a nervous little guy he was, he was actually very easy to travel with. Whenever I went on a trip, I would put his travel bin in the back seat of my car, and he was always very well behaved while on the road. If I had to make a stop somewhere, I'd bring him inside with me in his travel bag. The next road trip I take is going to feel very strange and empty without bringing him along.

I always wished that Puckie and I could have bonded better. I wanted so badly for him to get used to people, so that he could be touched and handled without always getting so scared of everything. Despite the way he was, though, I loved having him around, and he brought so much joy to my life.

For the last couple nights, Puck hadn't been eating his food. This had happened a few times in the past, and he was always okay afterwards, so I didn't think anything was seriously wrong, since he wasn't showing any other symptoms. However, on Saturday, he was breathing heavily all day. I was very concerned, and I was planning to make a vet appointment as soon as possible. It was too late, though. When I got home from work that night, he was gone.

The following day, my dear friend Noah helped me look for a nice place to bury my Puckie. We found a beautiful little spot between some trees, and on Sunday evening, December 5th, 2010, Puck was laid in his final resting place. I plan to visit him often. He left a few of his quills behind, and I am keeping them as a memento.

Goodbye, Puck. I don't know what the reason for your passing was, but I'm so sorry that I wasn't able to prevent it. I wish I had taken better care of you, so you hadn't left us at such a tender, young age. I wish that we could have had more time together in this life. I know that you're now the happiest you've ever been, and I look forward to seeing you again, my little sweetie. I love you so much, and I miss you already.

More generosity!

I got a very generous donation from someone! Thank you soooo much, Rob! Are you sure you don't want a drawing? The offer still stands! For everyone who has donated, I have a thank-you gift in the works. It might be a bit longer before they're ready, but I'm keeping track of all donors, and each of you shall be receiving one!

I drew a little something for Jed. It's an icon of his character, Trill. Here it is:

You can see a drawing of her by Jed here: Attack Phary Trill
She's a cute character!

Kai is fat. I've got Skink Cam on now, so go watch him be his fat self.

So much to update on!

I apologize for not updating in such a long time! It's been hard finding the time to gather my thoughts into a blog entry. So much has been going on lately....where to even begin? I guess I'll just open with the biggest news. I didn't want to jump the gun in posting about this, because I wanted to make sure that it was for real before I say anything. Here goes!

My back pain went away again. Just like the first time it happened, I really can't explain why. I hadn't been going to therapy for several days, and I hadn't even taken any medications for a few days prior. I woke up on Tuesday, November 23rd, and the pain was gone out of nowhere. Even the very night before it stopped, it had been hurting me badly. Nearly a week later, I'm still pain-free, so my life is returning back to normal for now. I even cancelled a doctor appointment I was supposed to have today, since it's no longer necessary.

I guess I shouldn't say I'm QUITE pain-free yet. Since I went nearly an entire month without using my lower back muscles to sit up, disuse atrophy kicked in pretty hard and those muscles are now extremely weak. This exact same thing happened the last time my back stopped hurting (except it was much worse then). I can sit up just fine for short periods, but I start feeling very worn out in my low back after extended periods. It's not completely intolerable, but it's definitely uncomfy, so I'm trying to slowly get my muscles back into shape without beating them up too much.

To everyone who wished me well and prayed for me during this time, I want to extend my deepest thanks to you from the bottom of my heart. I am a very spiritual person, and I believe that prayer can change lives. You all had a hand in making this happen, and I will forever be grateful to each and every one of you. Thanks to you, I can now live normally again, and this struggle has been a big reminder of all the things in my life I take for granted that I need to be thankful for. Right now, I am the happiest that I've been in a long time. Thank you, my friends.

Now, on to some other things...

My parents were in town for the last several days for Thanksgiving, and they just went home yesterday. We had a very nice visit, as usual, and I always enjoy spending time with them. They love going to see movies frequently, so we saw two while they were here, which were Tangled and Burlesque. I enjoyed both of them more than I expected to (Tangled especially). We also spent lots of time with other family members, and Thanksgiving itself was very nice. We had a fairly large gathering at my uncle's house, and since my grandma's birthday was the day before Thanksgiving, we also celebrated that. There was tons of yummy food, of course! I hope that my American readers out there also had a nice and enjoyable Thanksgiving! Here's a picture of my family from the gathering:

And a screw up...

Facepalm.

Since my roommates are going to be moving somewhere else in February, I am currently looking for a new place to live. I've been searching for a couple weeks now, and though I have found a couple of potential places available, I haven't managed to find anything that's perfect. Each place has had at least one or two things that bug me. Since I'm running out of time, I'll probably have to end up setting for one of those places, but I'll keep looking and looking while I still can!

One of the places is a really nice house. A lot of people live there, but they seem like a cool bunch that I would get along with well. They even met Kai and liked him! I'm pretty happy with almost everything about it, and the only thing that really bothers me is the location. It's a bit too far from where I work, and it would stink to have to either drive a long way or pay a bunch of tolls to get to work each day. My job doesn't pay enough for that kind of thing. I might end up going along with it if I don't find a place that works better, though.

Nerdy Show has been doing a lot of stuff lately. As far as things that I've taken part in, here are two Minisodes that were posted recently:

The first link in particular features a lot of talking by me (for once). There was one other thing we did recently that I took part in, which was this:

If you don't feel like clicking, the EarthBound Fanfest has been an ongoing event put on by Fangamer.com, which involves shipping a copy of EarthBound around to various people and groups all around the country and having each one play a designated part of the game while trying to complete some challenges. Nerdy Show participated in it, and I'm really happy I got to take part! It was a lot of fun.

You can watch a recording of the stream here, if you feel like it:
http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/11033197
As usual, I didn't talk very much (mainly because my back was bothering me), but I still had a good time!

So, how about that Black Friday! Did any of you rush out into the crowds and get some sweet deals? I sure as heck didn't! I worked! That was my first time ever working on Black Friday, and it wasn't as crazy as I thought it would be! Though, part of the reason for that is because my store was open the night before from midnight to 3 AM, and a big crowd came in for that. When I worked the morning shift, we did have a nice, big crowd, but it was nothing too insane. It was actually pretty fun! I had a good time!

As far as buying stuff, I did get a new copy of the second Professor Layton game from my store for $17.50. Not the BIGGEST deal ever, but since those games never drop in value, I thought I should jump on it. I also bought a few things today so far for Cyber Monday. The strangest of those things was a pair of pearl earrings. The reason why it's strange is because I got them from....Newegg.com! Since when have they sold stuff like that?! They were a really nice price, though, so I got'em. I also purchased Monkey Island 2 Special Edition and Knights of the Old Republic 1 from Steam. It looks like Amazon is going to have a few games on sale later today that I'm interested in, but I probably won't be around for those sales. Oh well!

Rest in peace, Leslie Nielsen. You were a funny, funny man, and I shall try to remember you with laughter instead of sadness.

I think that covers most of the big things that have been going on lately. This is already a huge entry, so I shall bring it to a close. I'm a little torn at the moment, because I was planning on spending this afternoon/evening at Disney (Hollywood Studios, to be exact), but it started raining not long ago! I'm not sure if it's a good idea to go now. I guess I'll have to decide quick, because the day isn't getting any younger! I'm so anxious to get back to Disney, because I wasted a whole month of being able to use my seasonal pass, thanks to my back pain! I must make up for lost time. I was actually planning to go to Hollywood Studios right when my back pain started up again, so I had to cancel that visit. I basically postponed it for a month. EDIT: Didn't go to Disney. The weather was too crappy. Oh well! There's always next time.

Crap, I just realized I need a new poll. I'll make a new one later as soon as I think of one.

Thank you for reading all of this, folks! You're the best! Let's end this with a photo of my daddy and I:

Uneventful

Hey folks, sorry for the lack of updates lately. I've had the last several days off from work, and not much has been going on. Since I'm trying to avoid driving as much as possible, I barely left the apartment at all, except to go to physical therapy.

I of course watched my Scott Pilgrim and Moulin Rouge blurays. I was very pleased with the quality of each of them. Scott Pilgrim features TONS of extras, so I spent nearly an entire day going through all of them. It was so awesome to see the deleted scenes and the pre-production stuff. They put an insane amount of effort into that movie. As for that original ending! I won't spoil it here, but man... if they had kept that, the movie would have probably received some serious backlash from the fans. I mean, I knew exactly what the original ending was going to be, since there are some things in the movie that lead up to it, but I guess they didn't have the time to go back and change those.

I haven't gone through any of the Moulin Rouge special features yet, but it's probably a lot of the same stuff from the original DVD release (which I have already gone through in the past). The movie looks absolutely gorgeous in HD, and I enjoyed this viewing more than ever before!

Last week, I abruptly purchased a game that I had been wanting for a long time. That game would be Katamari Forever! I've been a big fan of the series since the very first game was out, and I'm very happy to have a new one to play after so many years (I haven't played one since We Love Katamari came out). The only reason why I waited so long to buy it is because the price took forever to go down! However, when I checked it on Amazon last week, I was shocked at how cheap they were selling it. It's probably the cheapest you can find a sealed copy. I snatched it up immediately, and it arrived yesterday. I spent about 6 hours playing it yesterday, hehe. Though it isn't the most visually stunning PS3 game, it is definitely an improvement over the PS2 games. I never played the 360 one, so I have no basis for comparison there. The music is AWESOME! It features a bunch of remixes of the old songs, and they are RAD! It's such a fun game (like all the others), and I'm excited to play it some more!

As of the time of this posting, Skink Cam is back on. It's been really hard to have it on lately, because of the places where I have to lay down with my laptop. The USB cable for the cam doesn't quite reach my laptop in most places. I'll try to have it on when I can, though.

My back is doing a bit worse again. It had started to improve, but then it kind of plateaued off and reverted back. I guess I'll  have to try a different treatment method.

Well, after my long, unexpected and uneventful vacation, it's finally time to go back to work!

Bluray purchases!

I just picked up two of my favorite movies on bluray! Eeeeeee so happy. One of them came out today, and I've been super duper excited for it:

Yesssssssssss! I got the last copy at the store!

If you haven't seen Scott Pilgrim yet, I insist that you watch it as soon as possible. You'll get extra bonus points if you read the comic as well! I was a big fan of the comic before the movie came out. It's such a fun series, and I'm pretty sure most gamers out there would love it. The film is a fantastic adaption of the story, and it does a great job of condensing the six volumes of the comic into less than two hours of screen time. It does have some differences from the source material, though, so I think it's best to experience both! I'm really looking forward to checking out all the special features on this bluray. I really hope that it has some good deleted scenes! I know that the ending to the movie was reworked pretty close to its release, so I want to see what the original ending was like.

When it was announced that Michael Cera was playing the role of Scott, I was not a happy camper! I was never fond of his other acting roles, and it always felt to me like he was just playing himself instead of actually acting. I feared that the movie's quality was going to suffer with him as the lead. However, when I actually saw the movie, my opinion changed. I think he did a great job as Scott, and although I still don't think he was the top choice for the role, his performance was quite good. The rest of the cast did a great job as well, and I think they're all really well suited to the characters that they portray.

I was really lucky with this movie! I managed to score some free screening passes to go see it a few weeks before it came out in theaters. It was so awesome! The theater was jam packed with people that were really into it, and they made it so much fun. I loved the movie so much that I went to go see it two more times after it came out.

Alright, this next movie is one that I doubt the majority of you have any interest in:

Ahhhh, Moulin Rouge. How I love thee. This bluray only came out a few weeks ago, and it already had a big price drop. When I was at the store tonight to buy Scott Pilgrim, I just couldn't resist picking up this one as well when I saw the price. I already have it on DVD, but this movie is definitely worth the upgrade to bluray.  I'm so so excited to see how this movie will look in spiffy HD.

For some reason, I wasn't that crazy about this movie the first time I saw it. I dunno what it was. When I saw it the second time, I LOVED it. Since then, I've loved it more and more with each viewing. I'm a big fan of musicals, so this movie is right up my alley. Instead of having its own original songs, this movie features interesting (and sometimes humorous) covers of popular music all throughout it. They're done very well, and Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor really shine in their roles (as does the rest of the cast). If you like musicals, watch it! If you don't, be open minded and watch it anyway!

I thankfully have the next several days off from work. Both of these blurays have a lot of special features, so I intend to spend that time going through all of them.

Mmmm, cookie dough ice cream.

New Poll

The results of my last poll were pretty much what I expected. We've got a lot of youngins 'round these parts! I left that one up for so long because I had trouble thinking of something new. Well, I finally did! I'm quite curious about the ratio of male visitors to female visitors. Vote away!

My back is feeling a little better, thankfully. It's still too painful to sit up for more than a few seconds, but I can handle standing for longer periods now. I finished up my steroid pills that I was taking for it, so I hope it still continues to improve even without taking those.

The midnight release of Black Ops is tomorrow night. They have me working in the evening, though I'm not staying for the entire thing. We're having a huge event for it (like we did last year for Modern Warfare 2), so I'm expecting a super jam-packed store. So many Call of Duty fans! I might bring my webcam along and stream the event, so keep an eye out for that!

Therapy

Went to my first therapy session today. The people there were really nice! The therapist who worked with me was of course a gamer (like a good chunk of the people who live in this area are), and he identified me as one by my Sonic t-shirt, so he and I discussed games and other nerdy stuff throughout most of my session. I really hope physical therapy actually helps me this time, since it never did much good in the past.

I need to get into a new game. I'm not in the mood for playing any console stuff, since the places where I lay down make it kind of hard to see my TV. That leaves handhelds and PC. I'm leaning towards a PC game. Hmmm....what to play! I'll have to pick something from my immense library of unplayed games.

I can't believe how big Kai is getting! He can now almost reach the top of his tank when he presses himself against the side and stands up on his back legs. My little guy is growing up!

If I don't have a specific image/images to include with my posts, I guess I'll just do things Con-style and start including a random one that I find humorous or cool.

Parents and such

My parents were in town for the last few days. It was nice to spend time with them, since I don't get to very often. We also spent time with my grandma. We went out to eat a whole bunch, like we always do when they're around. My favorite place we went to was HOOTERS!!!!! MAN I have been craving those wings lately. Now I have about five meals worth of leftovers in my fridge, since I can never eat an entire serving of anything from a restaurant.

I had my doctor appointment yesterday. The people at that office seem to really know their stuff. I think this is the best I've ever felt about any of my doctor appointments over the years since I've had this problem. I was put on to a treatment plan, so I'm doing that now, and if there's no improvement within a couple weeks, I'm to call them back and we'll try something else.

While I was at a store with my mom, I found this crazy clothing brand that I loved. My favorite piece out of everything was this weird coat that I want really badly. It's one of the weirdest things I've ever worn, and I absolutely love it.

Those photos aren't very good quality. You can't see how pretty the colors are. Here's a better one:

The problem, though, is the price. It's ridiculously expensive! However, I did find it online for about half the price. There's a problem with THAT, though. They only ship to Spain! Right now, I'm trying to find a person who lives in Spain who I can have purchase it and ship it to me. I must have that coat! I usually don't freak out over clothes. This is pretty unlike me.

Happy Halloween!

I hope everyone had a fun Halloween!

I managed to toss a costume together at the last moment. Here it is:

I was a Lemming! If you don't know what Lemmings are, Google it. It's an awesome game that's been around for a long time. My dress is too short to be exactly accurate, but I did the best I could with my limited time. If I ever decide to dress as a Lemming again, I'll be sure to sew an outfit that's perfectly accurate to their classic designs!

I wore this costume to a Halloween party on Saturday night, and I also wore it to work today. Since it's a gaming-related costume, I was allowed. :D It was fun! A few people recognized what I was, so I'm pleased.

After work, I went to my aunt's house and spent some time with my family. We gave out candy to the kids that were trick-or-treating. Then, we went to my grandma's and I watched Evil Dead with my parents. Overall, it was a nice and relaxing Halloween.

So, tell me! What did you folks do for Halloween?

National Reptile Breeders' Expo 2010

You probably already saw the video on youtube, but here it is if you missed it:

This is a reptile show I went to back in August. I've actually had the video ready to upload for about two months! The only reason why I waited this long is because I was trying to find some good music I could use for the background audio. I didn't really like the background noise, but I finally decided to just use it anyway since I never found music that fits.

I decided to go to this show when I met a person who offered to carpool with me. I'm so happy I went! I was super excited to see the albino iguanas in person, because I've been wanting one for a long time now. I hope to buy one some day, but they are super duper expensive. I was also really happy to see all the different kinds of blue tongue skinks. The only kind that I ever saw in person before was....well, Kai! I pretty much recorded every single skink I saw.

I recorded so much footage at the show that I couldn't fit it all into the 15 minute time limit. I had to cut out a lot of it. I think I kept in the best stuff, though. Kai sure did love those worms I brought home for him! He would go nuts whenever I gave him one. I had to clean up a lot of worm guts!

Thanks everyone

Thank you so much for all the kind comments on my previous post. It means so much to me. I'm going to be calling a doctor tomorrow morning to make an appointment, so I guess we'll see how things go from there.

I forgot to mention that I went to see Back to the Future on Monday! AMC theaters had a couple of screenings of the movie in honor of its 25th anniversary, and I caught one of them. It was so awesome to see it on the big screen! It was originally released before I was even born, so it was really neat to have the opportunity. I was supposed to get a commemorative poster after the movie, but they had handed them all out before I got mine. That's what I get for being nice and sitting through the credits! :<

So I apparently just got accepted into Youtube's partnership program! This is very unexpected! I really didn't think they were going to approve my application, but I did it anyway for the heck of it. I guess I should try to upload videos more regularly now. I need to create an alternate account to upload videos with copyrighted content. Hmmm, I'll have to try to think of a good name to use for it.

Life is hard sometimes

I'll try not to make this too depressing, but I'm so bored right now that I don't know what else to do. Before I get into my present situation, here's a little back story to put it all into context:

When I was about 11 or 12 years old, I developed back problems. No one has ever been able to determine the cause of them. I certainly don't recall ever doing anything to injure my back, and neither do my parents. The only possible cause was something I may have done to it while studying martial arts, but once again, I don't remember a specific event that triggered it. I've seen many doctors, and after getting an MRI done, it was shown that I have two herniated discs in my lower back. I've tried many different treatments over the years, and not a single one has helped. These herniated discs cause a constant pain that is only relieved when I'm laying down.

In the beginning, it wasn't all that bad. It hurt all the time, but I could still live a pretty normal life. I would occasionally have flare-ups that required me to rest it here and there, but it was more of an inconvenience than anything. It did make it very hard for me to exercise, and I had to quit martial arts because it was too painful to continue. The lack of exercise resulted in my weight fluctuating a lot during my teenage years.

As time went on, it got worse and worse. By the time I was in college, it was very difficult for me to sit up. I could walk okay, but sitting upright was very painful. Standing still also caused me pain, and it became difficult for me to attend any events that require a person to stand still in long lines and such. Whenever I went to see movies, I would have to lean against the person next to me (usually my mom or my then-boyfriend) because I wasn't able to sit up. In school, I had to slump down in my chair and lean back as far as I could, and it usually didn't help much. I spent a lot of time in my classes doing nothing besides groaning in pain. After my classes, I usually just went back to my dorm room and laid down for the rest of the day. A good majority of my time was spent laying in bed.

At one point, I had a series of epidurals injected into my back. They completely removed my pain for a short time, and it was incredible. With the freedom to move without pain, I worked very hard to shed my excess weight and get myself into shape. It was a success, and I managed to get nice and thin before the pain returned. I've been in good shape ever since. However, once the pain came back, my life returned exactly to the way it was before.

When I was 19, I moved to another city in order to attend a different college. Right around the time I moved, my back miraculously stopped hurting! It happened out of nowhere, with no explanation whatsoever. For the first time in my adult life, I could live like a completely normal, healthy person. It was absolutely amazing. I loved the freedom I had, to do anything without fear of needing to nurse my sore back. There was a fear in the back of my mind that the pain would return some day, though. I expected it to happen when I was older, but after two and a half amazing years, the dreaded day arrived.

That day was three days ago. On Sunday, the 24th of October, 2010, I woke up with the familiar pain in my back once again. Just as it went away, it returned out of nowhere. I don't remember doing anything to strain it. It's just there. When I first woke up that morning, the pain wasn't too bad. It was annoying, but I figured I had just slept on it weird and it would go away. It didn't. As the day continued, the pain increased more and more. By the time I got home from work, I could barely walk. I stumbled around my apartment, wondering what on earth had made this happen again.

I got myself set up in my bed once again, the familiar place I used to spend most of my free time. I've been spending as much time as possible laying in either my bed or on the floor. I'm on the floor at the moment. It's been only three days, and I can already barely take any more of this constant laying down. I want so badly to get in my car and drive somewhere, but it's too painful to drive. I'm hoping and praying with everything I have that this isn't the end, that this is only temporary and I'll have my freedom back again soon. Realistically thinking, though, I doubt it will happen.

Before this happened, I was making plans to move into my own apartment very soon. I already have the place picked out, and I was hoping to move in the next couple months. If this back problem has returned permanently, though, then that is no longer an option for me. I'm unable to work and support myself when I'm like this. I'm thinking that I'll probably have to move back in with my parents. With them, I'll have more of a life than I could possibly have anywhere else. I'm going to give it a few more days, and if there's no improvement, then I'll most likely be putting in my two weeks notice at work.

I'm so very thankful for the last two and a half years of my life. It was an incredible experience, and I'll never forget it. Despite how depressing this blog entry sounds, I'm not unhappy right now. I just felt like sharing my story. It's nearly impossible for anything to bring down my spirit. No matter what ends up happening to me, I'll be okay.

Nerdy Show episode is up

Well, for anyone interested in listening to that podcast I'm a host on, you can find it here. I feel embarrassed all of a sudden! This was supposed to be 15-30 minutes long, but since we couldn't shut up, it's over an hour. I hope you enjoy it!

Mama's birthday/ Art show

Today was my mom's birthday! Happy birthday Mamaaaaaaa! I love you!

I had another long day at work. It was a better day than usual, though. We had a gaming-themed art show tonight, featuring art by the store owner's cousin. We had a ton of people show up, and it was a lot of fun. There was free pizza and cupcakes, and the cupcakes were so awesome! They were all Mario themed. Here are some pictures:
Yoshi and mushrooms!

Goombas! They even had feet!
These piranha plants were so cool!

They had red velvet cake inside. Delicious!

It's fun when I basically get paid to eat pizza, eat cupcakes, and mingle with people. My job rocks.

Nerdy Show

I just got back from recording a podcast! This group of folks in my area has a podcast called the Nerdy Show, and they recently invited me to be a part of it. Tonight, we recorded the first episode that I'm in. It sounds like they mainly want me around for the gaming-related episodes, which makes sense, considering that's my area of expertise. The main focus of this episode is Castlevania, but we touched on some other topics as well. It was a blast! I'll definitely link to the episode here as soon as it's available online.

Man I had a long day! Feels so good to be home.

Austin and Cody's Birthdaaaay

Today is both Austin and Cody's birthday! Happy birthday to two of my best buds!!! Also, Jed's already happened a few days ago, but I didn't post about it here, so happy belated birthday to mister Jed!

LOL YER 21, 25 AND 26

In other news, I must say I am EXTREMELY disappointed by all of the "No" votes on my Michael Jackson poll! I just don't know what we're going to do with this generation....*shakes head*

New poll time!

Art post 10/4

A long time ago, I used to contribute art to a project called Sonic 2 HD. As the name implies, it's an HD remake of Sonic 2. However, I've been unhappy with the direction of the project for quite some time now, so I decided not to contribute anymore. I did have one old sprite from the project laying around that I had never finished, though. Yesterday, I finally finished it up to my liking:

It's done entirely with vector shapes, so it was very time-consuming! I based it off of the original Knuckles sprite, and I also referenced official Sonic art sources for extra detail. Here is the original sprite:

I also have a sprite of Tails that I made for the project. If you haven't seen that already, you can view it here.

It's a shame that Sonic 2 HD hasn't really gone anywhere. It seemed like such a promising concept in the beginning. Oh well.

Also, completely unrelated, but I went mini-golfing last night and it was fun! :D

More Disney Fun

I went back to Disney again on Wednesday. I'm trying to get the most I can out of my seasonal pass, since it was so dang expensive! One really crappy thing, though, is that seasonal passes do NOT come with free parking! What the heck is up with that, Disney?! If I'm going to be visiting Disney regularly, I am not okay with paying $14 to park every single time. Thankfully, I found a pretty good method for avoiding the parking fee. It takes a little time, but I think it's worth it!

How to park for free at Disney World and get to one of the parks:

Step 1.) Park your car at Downtown Disney (one of the only places at Disney that allow you to park as long as you want without any sort of fee or fear of a tow truck). It helps to park close to the bus stops.

Step 2.) Take a bus to one of the Disney resorts. Depending on the park you're going to, there are certain resorts you should stop at to make the trip faster. They are as follows:

Magic Kingdom - Grand Floridian
Epcot - Either the Boardwalk resorts or the Swan and Dolphin
Animal Kingdom - Animal Kingdom Lodge
Hollywood Studios - Pop Century

Step 3.) From the resort, take the bus (or the monorail, if the resort you went to is connected to it) to your park of choice!

That's pretty much it. It might be too much hassle for some people, but I think it's fun! I really enjoy riding the buses and the monorail, so I think it's a great way to start and end my days at Disney. Getting back to Downtown Disney is pretty much the same thing, you just go from the park to a resort, then from the resort to Downtown Disney. I know that Disney majorly frowns upon people doing what I did, but I majorly frown upon them not including free parking with a seasonal pass! I guess that makes us even.

My most recent visit was spent at Magic Kingdom. I figure I should only visit one park at a time, in order to keep everything fresher. I had a lot of fun! I went alone (since none of my friends in this area have seasonal passes), but that's okay. Going alone means you can do whatever you want without worrying about anyone else! I rode every ride I felt like riding, and it was awesome. I started and ended my visit with Space Mountain, which I love. I tried recording myself on a few rides, but none of them really turned out except for this one (which you've most likely already seen on my youtube page):

Ahhhh, Tomorrowland Speedway. You never fail to excite.

I had one important objective for this visit: purchase and consume one Mickey's Premium! That's the famous Mickey-shaped ice cream bar. I hadn't had one since I was 3 or 4 years old, and I desperately wanted one during my previous Disney trip, but I never got to have one. :< I made up for it this time, though!

Mmmm! So yummy!

On my way out of the park, I stopped at the Contemporary resort. I left the park a little before the fireworks show, in order to avoid the huge crowd rushing out onto the buses when it was over. I got to the resort right before the fireworks started, and I had an AWESOME view of them while I was waiting for the bus!

Disney fireworks never disappoint!

Overall, I had an awesome day! I think I'll go to Animal Kingdom next time.

Awwww ;___;

I forgot to mention that I got a donation the other day! Thank you so much, Sam! That was so sweet of you.

I want to start doing sketches/drawings for people that donate. Sam, if you'd like me to draw something for you, just let me know what you want!

Skink Cam is Back

Sorry for the delay, pals. Skink Cam is finally back on. The reason why it's been off all this time started when I went to Disney. A friend was taking care of Kai for the weekend, so I couldn't have it on then. When I got home, I accidentally broke the bulb for his UV lamp. I still haven't gotten him a new one yet, so his cage is a bit dark at the moment. I thought it would be too dark for the cam, but I decided to just turn it back on for the heck of it. I'll be getting him a new UV bulb soon, though!

Skink Cam!

Universal :\

I went to Universal's Islands of Adventure yesterday. Meh..... it was honestly pretty lame. I was just there in March, and I wasn't ready to go back again so soon. All the new Harry Potter stuff was really cool, but otherwise, it was the same ol' same ol'. That park just BORES me. I'm a wimp with scary rides, so I can't even ride half of the stuff there. I do really really love the Spider-man ride, but it isn't enough to keep me coming back to the park over and over.

I am so done with Universal. I don't wanna go back for at least 5 years or so (unless I can go for free or something). The parks just aren't worth the cost of admission to me. I think my weekend at Disney ruined Universal for me, honestly. Disney is so magical and amazing, and Universal is lacking that feeling. It doesn't have the same atmosphere.

Overall, meh. I enjoyed the new Harry Potter ride, and I got to drink yummy pumpkin fizz at the Harry Potter restaurant, but those were the most interesting parts of the day. Universal isn't that great.

DISNEY WEEKEND

Man, my weekend was amazing!

I spent all day Friday - Sunday with some friends at Disney World. They were friends from my home town that I hadn't spent much time with in years, so it was awesome to be there with them. They convinced me to buy a seasonal pass, so we hopped all around to the different parks all weekend.

That was the most time I've ever spent at Disney in a single trip. I've only been a handful of times in my life, so this was a real treat. My favorite park is Epcot, and we went every day. I was so so SO excited to finally see Captain EO! (If you don't know, Captain EO is the 3D Michael Jackson show there.) In the past, I thought that I would never get a chance to see it, since it had been taken out of Epcot a very long time ago, so it's amazing that they brought it back. I had been wanting to see the real thing for many years (I just watched a low quality, non-3D video of it before). It was freakin' awesome!

We got to go on pretty much every ride we wanted, since there were barely any lines. I think my favorite is Space Mountain! I wanna go back soon and ride it again. I'm a super baby when it comes to rides, and I can't handle steep drops, so I avoided Splash Mountain. I was fine with pretty much everything else, though (besides Tower of Terror, obviously). The shows were all so good, too! The Finding Nemo musical is awesome. I liked it more than the movie, hehe.

I managed to be my super cheap self while I was there and not spend a lot of money, thankfully. My meals were all reasonably priced, and I only bought one thing: an amazing Sonic wallet that's even better than the one I wanted before! I am so in love with it. Here's what it looks like:

*drooooool* I smile every time I look at it.

I dunno what else to say about the trip! It was awesome and I had a fantastic time and I wanna go back! I'll probably go back very soon, since I have a seasonal pass now.

Haaaaay

Guess what?! I'm at Disney World! More details later. ;D

Stuff I've been up to

Wow, I finally beat Uncharted 1 today. It only took me like TWO WEEKS to do! I'm ridiculously slow with finishing games. :< I'll probably check out Uncharted 2 before long, since everyone raves about how amazing it is.

Saturday was the 3 year anniversary of Lantz's passing. I still miss you as much as ever, my little girl. I've been working on a little drawing in her honor, and I hope to have it done soon.

We were having a buy 2 get 2 free sale for Labor Day at work, so I bought a few games yesterday.

After Burner (Master System), Wave Race 64, Bionic Commando: Elite Forces (GBC) and Oddworld Adventures 2 (GBC).

I also bought a rad e-reader on ebay last week. It should be arriving in the next day or two. I can't wait until it gets here! Sooo many books I wanna read. Here's the one I got:

It's the Astak Pocket Pro. I got an awesome deal on it, too. I already downloaded a ton of e-books in preparation for its arrival.

There's one more thing I'm drooling after right now that I haven't bought yet:

Holy CRAP my eyes lit up when I saw that. I've been wanting a classic Sonic wallet for years. YEARS, I TELL YA! I shall definitely be buying that bad boy soon.

And now I shall conclude with a random picture:

I'm off to play some Scott Pilgrim boss rush mode before I sleep. Have a good night!
